Ears are fine, but what a bad day

Well, Tink and Mommy went to the doctor today. Tink has been complaining lately of hurting when she urinates. We were worried that she had a bladder infection or a UTI. She has also been having diarrhea lately which is causing a rash. The doctor did the usual check the breathing, ears, throat, etc and Tink's ears still look fine. :) Yeah! As soon as the doctor saw her without her diaper she said she has a yeast infection. It has been a while since she has been on antibiotics and the rash comes and goes so I had no clue it was a yeast infection (I realize I have a lot to learn as a mother). Since she is not potty trained yet the assistant said that she may possibly need to be catheterised. I asked if it would be ok if I gave her a lot of water and took her diaper off and could get her to pee in a cup. She said they had bags they could tape on her to catch the pee too, possibly. When the doctor came in and saw her yeast infection she said that Tink would have to catheterised because the yeast infection would automatically contaminate the urine sample. Oh how my baby cried. She hates it when I wipe her after she has a bowel movement because it hurts so bad. I had to hold her arms down while two other women held her legs and put the catheter in, and took it out. She cried so hard and at one point I could make out her calling "Mommy." Between my own tears I tried to soothe her and tell her I loved her and I was there and I was soooo sorry but we needed to do this to help her get better. I remember making eye contact with the nurse when I was trying to see if they were almost done (I'm not sure I would have been able to tell jus by looking anyways) and seeing the compassion in her eyes as she saw my tears streaming down my face and heard Tink's wails. The doctor came back in with a popsickle for Tink. It still took a while to get Tink to calm down even after she was dressed. The good news is that she does NOT have any infection in her urine. The pain is from her yeast infection. :( The doctor gave us a prescription for nystaten.
We went right away to fill the prescription. I was carrying Tink, her popsickle and the prescription when the wind blew the prescription out of my hands and sent it across the aisle of the parking lot. I hurried and chased it down. I was able to step on it and was bending down to pick it up when Tink's popsickle spilled on my leg and foot causing my flipflop to be sticky. I got so frustrated I threw her popsickle down in order to pick up her prescription. As if she hadn't been through enough at the doctor's I devastated her when I threw her treat down. She cried so hard again. My friend took her and calmed her down as we walked into the store. Of course, the pharmacy was closed (the morning pharmacist had gotten sick and was taken to the hospital - Tink didn't have a monopoly on today being a bad day apparently) so we came on home. I was anxious to get Tink down for her nap and she was sooo tired, but when we got there the children living in the basement of the house were out and playing so I let her play for a while. She was outside with the two oldest children when the oldest came in and said they told her she couldn't do what they were doing but she didn't listen and fell and hit her head. I ran outside and she was sobbing. I felt two knots on the back of her head. (They had been playing and standing on the frame of Grandpa G's raft.) It took a while for her to calm down again. I told her I wanted her to take a nap and she insisted she didn't want a nap. I said that was fine I just wanted her to rest with me for a while and sure enough she was asleep in a few minutes. Right now she is napping and I am hoping when she wakes up her day will be MUCH better. Daddy said he will bring home a treat for her when he gets off work. "Pulling together we can work things out."

I feel your pain! At 6 months old Rosalee needed a catherder put in for a sample and I'm not sure who cried more, me or her! When we gave Rosalee antibiotics the doctor said she might get a yeast infection so I looked up non-medical ways of treating them. You could give Tink yogurt because those bacterias help. Rosalee ate some soy yogurt (she's lactose intolerant :( ) and then we bought powder bacteria at the vitamin store. The powder was expensive so I'd try the yogurt approach first.

Don't be hard on yourself. You are a mommy, not a doctor or miracle worker yet. You are still learning as are we all.(remember not even your own mom knows everything, just ask a teenager) Remember in the long run she will not remember this bad experience. She also will not remember mommy getting mad and threwing down her treat. god made them easy going by nature so they could handle our "learn as you go parenting style".
You are a great mommy.
